Abstract

The present work has two major objectives: to study processes of ethnic community building in the diachronic perspective, and to write a social history of the Afro-American population in the Atlantic region of Nicaragua (Creoles) from their beginnings in the 17th century to the present. It focuses on the emergence of the Creoles as an ethnic group (ethnogenesis), the social and cultural differentiations within the Afro-American population, and the relations to the Amerindian and Mestizo inhabitants of the Atlantic Coast as well as to the nation state.
