"Das leere Grab" Film screening and discussion about coming to terms with German colonial crimes
Tens of thousands of human remains from former colonies are still stored in German museums. It is still unclear how they can be identified and traced back. The film "Das leere Grab" follows two families on their arduous search for their ancestors.
In their film, the German-Tanzanian directing duo Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay tell of the traces and traumas that the former German colonial rule has left behind in Tanzanian families and communities to this day - and of the strength and self-empowerment of the surviving relatives, who are stubbornly fighting for a complete clarification.
In the subsequent discussion, we ask what the situation is today regarding the long overdue reappraisal of German colonial history and crimes.
Mit dabei sind:
- Katja Keul MdB, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office
- Dr. Mareike Späth, Curator of the Ethnological Collection of the Landesmuseum Hannover
- Prof. Brigitte Reinwald, Leibniz University Hanover, research focus: post-colonial cultures of remembrance, provenance and restitution research
- Dr. Emmanuel Kileo, Director of the Evangelical Lutheran Missionary Society (ELM) in Lower Saxony
Moderation: Djenabou Diallo Hartmann, Deputy Group Chairwoman, Spokeswoman for Migration, Refugees and Anti-Racism, Alliance 90/The Greens in the Lower Saxony State Parliament
In an open exchange, we want to give space to the debate on the restitution of human remains and cultural assets. We would like to consider and critically discuss the positions and ideas of communities of origin, countries of origin and institutions in Germany.
