Abstract

This article resumes the state of historiography on slavery, emancipation, and post-emancipation in the French Caribbean, particularly with respect to Martinique and Guadeloupe, with emphasis on gender questions. It treats laws on slavery, gender-specific division of labor, slave families, slave resistance, gendered forms of manumission, the abolition process, the substitution of slave labor by coerced labor of former slaves and immigrant contract workers, postslavery conflicts in labor court records, and discusses open research questions, e.g., about former slaves' ideas on, and agency in family and gender relations.
