The regional focus of CEAGS is on the Atlantic region, linking Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and North America. The special focus is on the relations between South and North and the interconnections within the global South. In recent research literature, this space is also referred to as the "Atlantic World". Since the 15th century, it has been shaped by the exchange of and between people, goods, cultural practices, knowledge and ideas. The scholars working in CEAGS also understand it as an intersection and contact zone between Africa, Europe and the Americas, and as part of those worldwide processes of contestation, change and interconnectedness that are now referred to as globalisation. This Atlantic space is an "open" space, a sociotope and a regional point of departure with diverse connections to other world regions (see also: research fields).

The members of the Centre for Atlantic and Global Studies are responsible for the organisation and management of the Master's programme Atlantic Studies in History, Culture and Society. This programme, which was launched in 2009, is characterised by interdisciplinary teaching, international guest lecturers and a wide range of opportunities for students to spend time abroad (semesters abroad, international research and internships; see also: Information for prospective students).

The Centre for Atlantic and Global Studies strives to facilitate academic dialogue between North and South so that all participants can participate and contribute on an equal footing. For this reason, the Centre initiates and promotes cooperation in research and teaching with various universities and research institutions in the Atlantic world.
